Full Review of Annual Budget

Council held a lengthy debate in April about holding the residential tax rate of 0.853 cents per $100 of assessed value versus making slight adjustments up or down.

Each year I have pushed to have the entire budget come before council for debate. For example, the entire staff and programming budget is not reviewed. Councillors look only at what to do with minor changes that are the result of annual increases in property assessments.

My sense is that there are some areas of excessive and wasteful spending while other areas are in need of additional funds.

Working with residents, the people who provide the money for council to spend on their behalf, the County of Kings would very likely make smarter decisions that would better address our needs.

Progressive municipalities are taking participation by the public in assessing and setting budgets seriously. We can too.
